How to Charge the Correct VAT Rate with Alerio Print
If you want to manage VAT correctly, resources like VATGlobal and SimplyVAT can be very helpful. Here’s a summary based on your location and sales volume:
For EU-based Sellers:
-
If you’ve reached your country’s sales threshold:
You must register as a VAT-collecting business. For example, in Germany, the threshold is €12,500. Contact your local tax office for specific guidance. -
If you haven’t reached the sales threshold:
VAT registration is optional. However, Alerio Print will charge VAT on all orders fulfilled, as required by law. Make sure to account for these charges in your pricing.
For Non-EU Sellers Selling to EU Customers:
You may need to register for VAT in the EU. VAT is ultimately paid by the customer, and you can often reclaim it. Once registered, provide your VAT number to Alerio Print so we can apply a 0% VAT rate on EU-bound orders. Without a valid VAT ID, VAT will be charged on all EU orders.
Once You’re Registered:
- Learn your country’s VAT reporting and invoicing rules.
- Collect VAT on orders shipped to EU member states.
- File VAT returns with your tax authority and deduct VAT paid in your supply chain.
Important Checkout Notes:
- VAT must be displayed separately at checkout. Platforms like Shopify have built-in features for this—check their documentation if needed.
Remote Selling:
- Monitor the EU “remote selling” threshold (€10,000 as of July 1, 2021). Exceeding this means you must register for VAT under the OSS (One-Stop-Shop) scheme or in the specific member state.
For personalized guidance, always consult a licensed accountant familiar with your local tax laws.
